Medals Galore for our Special Athletes

Main Content Inline SmallSunday 17th June saw the Special Olympics Surrey - Kingston Athletics Squad compete in the Special Olympics Greater London Athletics Competition. With one of the smallest squads our 6 athletes triumphed and came away with 9 out of the12 medals up for grabs. Their new coach, Andrew Smith, has worked wonders and trained them hard over the past few weeks in preparation, which certainly paid off as the athletes have won the most medals at a single competition so far. Special Olympics Surrey provides year-round sports training and competition programmes for children and adults with learning disabilities.

Team Kingston splash their way to Medal Glory

Main Content Inline SmallAfter 27 event days and 80 competitions across 30 sports, Kingston's final standing in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games was 18th out of the 33 boroughs competing.

Medal winning performances this year came from both the girls and boys (pictured) Volleyball teams who made the finals and picked up a Bronze under the management of Richmond Volleyball Club. Five of the boys were subsequently scouted for the South England Squad.

The Finals weekend at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre saw the boys squash team, coached by Michael Hennings of Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club, smash their way to Bronze beating Richmond in their last match.

Three weeks earlier however saw the highlight of Kingston's medal glory as the Kayak Slalom and Mixed Rowing Teams splashed into Silver medal positions.

Kingston has many individual case studies of achievement across all of the sports this year with many young people competing for the first time in their sport; all of these young people have been inspired and continue to play at a local sports club in preparation for next year!

The Active Kingston Team would like to wish all our young athletes the best of luck in the year ahead and send a huge thank you to participants, coaches, team managers and everyone else that has made this year's entry possible.

A full breakdown of results can be found on the London Youth Games website:-www.londonyouthgames.org
